This is who we are

CSSF is a cooperative that pushes the boundaries for smart sustainable farming.

Front runners among farming companies, tech companies and knowledge institutions work together with other relevant stakeholders to stimulate a system change in the agri-food domain in order to fulfill the (coming) needs of the society and avoiding the negative impact of the sector that puts our long term food provision at risk.

Summary Agrifood Challenges

AgriFood challenges are big challenges for the next generations with an increasing world population in combination with global developments that endangers sufficient food supply like climate change resulting in more extremes occurring in the weather system (rising temperatures, drought, heavy rains), soil degradation & pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Big societal challenges in agrifood are also related to human health , to diet change and to animal welfare.

Challenge Space Farming - The Voyage

This case centers around the technological solutions we might need if we want to start farming on a planet like Mars.
Celebrating the first moon landing 50 years ago, people start thinking about returning to the Moon and building a moon base.
Now we are thinking about going to Mars.

For any of these challenges astronauts may need to grow their own food since bringing food, even if it is freeze dried, may be to much payload. This challenge is one of two Space Farming challenges.

Design a zero gravity space farm

This is why your input is valuable!

As you know we have a grand societal challenge on our hands with the accelerating climate change. It is negatively affecting agriculture and thereby our capability to feed our growing world population. At the same time climate change is aggravated by the way we produce our food.
By working on the creation of solutions for farming on Mars or the Moon you are forced to really think outside the box, which could not only lead to great new concepts for space farming, but to the discovery of solutions for sustainable agriculture on Earth as well. Many organisations in our network would be very interested in those latter solutions. And if you come up with a break-through idea that can be applied in space, we have warm connections with the European Space Agency. So your input is not ending up in a drawer. Your input is very likely to be used either by yourself for the next stage of your study or by other students by taking your ideas to the next level, in cooperation with interested companies and NGOs.

Follow up

Depending on the use case we can organize a visit to a relevant frontrunner farming or tech company. We can also provide a follow-up assignment that can fit with a course / educational project where you can earn credits while working on the follow-up assignment, and who knows, possibly leading to a student team participating in an international competition or to a startup?
